Westbourne Grove – History & Info

Time out article quoted the following in 1997 about Westbourne Grove W11: “Seeking a key shopping road symbolic of western aspirations, we decided that preposterously fashionable Westbourne Grove, or “Westbourne Village”, has it all. It was here that Madonna headed during breaks in filming “Evita” – to the funky boutiques, the avant-garde florists, the designer jewellery and futuristic furniture (at millennial prices). This is certainly up-and-coming – in terms of price tags that is.”
In 1840 the development of Westbourne Grove began. Before 1938 the street was called Archer Street. In 1950 the area became run down, it was at this time that Peter Rachman the notorious slum landlord now known for the phrase ‘Rachmanism’. He rented homes to migrants from West Indies’ who because of discrimination could not find accommodation. He gave them home with very high and progressively rising rents.
